Free Beers for Everyone

So last night we went out(a Thursday night, because we will never grow up.) We showed up to this new bar, and there was a cornhole tournament starting in 30 minutes. Awesome surprise (we are snipers.) So there we are having a few beers after work and watching the Blue Jackets vs. Penguins hockey game, and all of the sudden we are entered into this tourney.

Now, everyone in this bar has every reason to hate us. We are far superior in skill, we care too much about the game, take it too seriously, and are stunningly attractive (at least our mom's think so.) Basically to everyone at the bar, we are massive douchebags stealing their prize money and chances of hooking up with hot girls. However, because we were able to laugh, and genuinely make an effort to interact with new people we turned everyones' ideas of us. We were able to make friends, meet hot girls, tell stories, get free beer all night, and people were basically paying to play against us. ((I felt like Tom Sawyer just watching as everyone else white-washed the fence.) We were able to flip the jealousy into friendship. Great social skill and "secret of college" that we just unlocked.

First of all, the first thing we did when we came into the bar was smile, start telling hilarious stories back and forth for a couple minutes, and learning the bar-tenders name. We genuinely tried to have fun, and share it with others (as terrible and fake as that sounds, if you focus on having nothing but fun, it actually works.) So we made Katie laugh for little, and then went over to the tournament area. We just jumped onto some open boards and started dicking around and practicing trick shots. We introduced ourselves to almost everyone by board hopping around, and laughing and joking with every person we practiced against.

Competition and games(cornhole, beer pong, drinking games) are great way to meet people, also, walking over to people you have met, and then introducing yourself to their friends works really well too. Basically, your job is to make friendly contact with everyone in your social environment, and then you can't mess up. This simple act of introducing ourselves made it so almost everyone felt comfortable commenting on our game, or anything that happened. So we started playing fantasy cornhole (picking a person that was playing and rooting for them, making the perosn you are playing in fantasy drink.) So basically we just ran around and played little mini-games with everyone.

Literally within one hour, we had girls coming over and giving us free beers. I got 5 in a row between a group of 3 girls personally. My buddy got a bunch as well. We not only had beers now, but we had cheerleaders for every game that we played. People we would match up against said, "Geez, did you bring everyone of your friends just to watch you play cornhole?" We told them the truth, "I've never even been to this bar before, we met all these people like an hour ago." You should have seen their face, they were amazed. Not to mention when girls came over and gave us beers.

So essentially we turned this whole bar into our best friends, got free beers all night, had the best looking girls in the bar on our arms, and clean sweeped the tourney. I'm not kidding, people were calling their friends on their cell phones and telling them to come to the bar to meet us, because we were hilarious, and "the best throwers in the world," as one girl said.

I don't say this to brag at all, I say this because this is one of the huge skill you can use in college. All we did was introduce ourselves and played games with people.

Think of what the alternative was. We show up, we stick to ourselves, kick everyone's ass in cornhole, piss off all the people playing, sit in a corner, don't meet any girls, pay for all of our beers, and leave.

The only thing that kept this from happening was our mindset of going out with the goal of having an absolute blast, and making new friends. So next time you go out, give it a try. Introduce yourself to new people, and make some new friends, and have yourself a good time.

The "Girls Gone Wild" concept

Ok, today I have kind of a sexy topic. So our marketing team has basically come up with the coolest thing ever for being able to drum up some excitement and publicity for our campaign to make college the greatest 4 -8 years of your life!

We have decided that we are going to hold a Youtube contest and have college kids make videos of why SOC (Secrets of College) should come to their campus and throw them "The best college party ever." First of all, I was completely in on the idea simply because it means that I get to travel the country going from college to college and rocking out massive parties. Number 2, it gives us a chance to make an impact on a ton of people all around the country which is the whole campaign's purpose in the first place!

So it has all but been decided, we are going to follow the Girls Gone Wild marketing concept. Put together a team of the hottest and most fun party girls, make some SoC T-shirts to give out, and visit the winning and most fun colleges(maybe even make a huge tour around the country) and throw massive parties. Now we aren't going to have cameras trying to humiliate girls or get them hammered to show us skin. We will however be putting together some killer parties that are sure to please the crowds.

So, heres the deal, if you want us to make sure we don't miss your school, then start making videos now, because let's face it, most of you are not going to be in school when our website launches on MAY 15th. So you are going to have to make your videos between now and then. So start working on some ideas as to why we should come to your school, and how you would design the best party you have ever seen. You can turn them in on May 15th, but start working on ideas now!

Contest Video Rules (official rules will be posted on the website in a few days)
www.secretsofcollege.info

Here are the basics:

1. Come up with a video that explains the best party ever! What is the theme? What is going on? What is the music? How is it decorated? How big is it? What makes it memorable and different? Etc... BE CREATIVE! But most importantly how SoC can help you pull it off! We are not going to fly everyone to some tropical island, and our marketing team is not going to give us endless cash flow.

2. Tell us why you deserve to have SoC come to your college and party with you!

3. Tell us how you would market the party, and how you are going to get people to come! We don't want to throw a crazy awesome party, and have no one show up!

Do's and Don'ts

1. Must submit a contact person age 21 or older that will be at school next fall, (tour doesn't start until Fall of 09') that will be in charge of communication, and welcoming of SoC. High school kids, that will be attending a college are eligible, but must have a contact person at school that is willing to host the party.

2. Video's are to be no longer than 4 minutes in length, or we will not consider your entry.

3. Videos should be hilarious, make a good point, create excitement, and be awesome.

3. Videos cannot depict any nudity.

4. Video must not suck.

Good luck to everyone, and we hope to hear from you soon. Any questions, feel free to contact us at secretsofcollege@gmail.com

A spring college weekend

It was 70 degrees in Ohio this weekend! I never really understood how everyone in Ohio goes into a semi-depression during the months of January and February until I realized I had fallen into the trap until Saturday. I for the first time actually noticed that I had been miserable all winter. As Lewis Black eloquently spoke, "Winter sucks, it is so cold that I can't even finish my sentences in my head... I need to go to the grocery store, the video store... F**k it's cold!" This couldn't be any more true. Every time you get in your car it is like locking yourself inside a frozen cave for 5 minutes.

So when I got the chance to wake up to 70 degrees, I took full advantage. We invited everyone to come over to our place and "play outside." My brother brought over girls, we cranked up the stereo, probably tossed 20 games of cornhole, invited the hot girls from the apartment complex over, made friends with the neighbors (who brought down lawn darts!) drank a smorgasbord of beers, and BS'd until we told stories about Chopotle, which obviously lead to a dinner run.

Now this is why we live in Ohio! The contrast between winter and spring basically feels like being resurrected from the dead. The dull gray of winter is gone, and the pastel colors of spring are alive. Isn't it also great how all the girls come out of hibernation in the spring? Where do these gorgeous girls hide all winter? Do they all get taken up with Santa until spring? Are they all huge NHL fans? Do chicks get addicted to Xbox? Regardless, it is nice to see everyone firing at 100% efficiency again.

So when you get the chance to enjoy the weather, go for it big, invite everyone over, pump up the jams, grill out, throw some bags, and make friends with everyone around you. Do it all in a high traffic area, so that people will want to join you. That type of atmosphere is hard to miss, and will attract some fun people. Hope you all enjoy the new climate, and keep checking back in...
